Brooklyn Dentist Specializing in Dental Crowns

Dental Crowns in Brooklyn, New York

Dental crowns in Brooklyn, New York are specialized prosthetics that are positioned over teeth to enhance strength, durability, and to create a smoother look. They can be used when a tooth is cracked, there is an old filling that needs to be replaced, or severe tooth decay, to name a few instances. Not only are crowns custom made, but they also come in a multitude of different materials depending on the case and are matched to the color of your other teeth for a uniform appearance.

A dental examination can help us to determine when you may need a crown. We can examine your teeth and gums to determine whether you’re a viable candidate for dental crowns in our Brooklyn dental office.

A Finest Quality Porcelain Crowns Designed For You

A dental crown is designed to cover up a tooth that is badly damaged and where much of its original structure has been lost. Sometimes dental crowns are used to cosmetically improve the appearance of a tooth and to create a more perfect smile.

Every dental crown made here in Brooklyn at the LuxDen Dental Center has been carefully designed to closely replicate the size and shape of a natural tooth and we only use the finest quality porcelains that have the same kind of translucency and liveliness found in a real tooth.

Once the crown is in place, structure and strength will have been restored, so you will be able to smile with complete confidence and you can bite and chew without fear of your tooth crumbling or cracking.

When Would I Need a Dental Crown?

Dr. Umanoff and our team of Brooklyn dentists here at the LuxDen Dental Center may suggest you have a crown if you have a tooth that has a particularly large filling, perhaps due to significant tooth decay and where it has become weakened due to loss of structure. If you left that tooth with just a filling, there is a real risk that the tooth could crack or fracture when you bite or chew food.

We may also suggest you have a crown if you have a tooth that has become broken or fractured, or where it has received root canal therapy.

Dental crowns can also be used to restore teeth that are badly worn down or to cover up a tooth that is misshapen or too small, or which is severely discolored. Crowns are also used to hold dental bridges in place and can cover up dental implants.

What Is the Procedure for Having a Crown?

If you do need a crown, our dentist Dr. Umanoff will explain the procedure in a lot more detail, including why this treatment is necessary and which crown would best suit your needs. Your tooth will need to be prepared by shaping it and removing all damaged portions. This part of the treatment is
carried out under local anesthetic to ensure you are completely comfortable at all times.

Conventional crowns are made in a dental laboratory and the next step of the process is to take a detailed impression of your newly prepared tooth. The impression is then sent to the dental laboratory with our prescription and will be handcrafted to our exact specifications. This normally takes at least a week or two, during which time your tooth will be protected with a temporary crown. You will need to take a bit more care while wearing a temporary crown as it’s best to avoid very hard or sticky foods that could loosen or break a crown.

When you return to have your permanent crown fitted, we will remove the temporary crown before trying in your new restoration to make sure the fit and appearance is absolutely perfect. Once we are satisfied, the crown is cemented permanently in place. Crowns made in a dental laboratory can be fabricated from metal alloys that are polished to a high sheen and which are suitable for repairing back teeth where there is very little room. We can also provide you with metal alloy crowns that are covered up with lifelike porcelain and which create a highly aesthetic look.

Our top quality crowns are made entirely from porcelain and are suitable for cosmetic smile makeovers and for anyone who wants their smile to look its very best. The nice thing about all ceramic crowns is the way the light is transmitted right through the crown, whereas with a crown that has a metal substructure, the light is unable to pass all the way through. These crowns still look extremely good, but it’s more difficult to replicate the natural appearance of a real tooth. We also have another option which is to have a crown made while you wait.

Types of Dental Crowns

There are various types of dental crowns, all of which will benefit different patients. Our professional dental team at LuxDen can evaluate your teeth and offer a professional opinion on what dental crown would work best for you.

PFZ Crowns

PFZ crowns brooklyn nyAlso known as Porcelain Infused Zirconium, this is one of our favorite choices for our patients in Brooklyn.

This type of crown combines strength, durability, and aesthetics.

PFZ crowns allow more light to pass through, making these dental crowns look like your actual teeth.

This makes these crowns more suitable to be used on your front teeth to retain that “real” aesthetic look.

Zirconium Crowns

zirconium crowns brooklyn nyConsidered to be the strongest, zirconium crowns come in opaque and translucent varieties in Brooklyn. They are made of the strongest type of crystal. Since they are so durable, they are perfect for withstanding chewing and pressure forces (this also makes them long-lasting).

Zirconium crowns are great for hiding tooth damage caused by fractures or even staining. Best of all, these dental crowns can be easily reshaped, colored or modified according to the needs of each dental patient. Also, less tooth structure needs to be removed to place this dental crown.

Ceramic Crowns

ceramic crowns brooklyn nyAmazingly lifelike results can be achieved using an all-ceramic crown. This option has a high aesthetic appeal and is perfect for the front teeth since it mimics the tooth structure and transparency.

This type of dental crown provides a better and more natural color and is suitable for those patients in Brooklyn who have allergies to metal.

This type of ceramic crown can be used for both front and back teeth.

PFM Crowns

PFM crowns brooklyn nyPFM crowns are made of two components: a metal shell (substructure) that will fit over a trimmed tooth and the porcelain material that will be fused to the shell to give the crown its tooth-like appearance and color.

There are three different shell options for PFM crowns which include:

  • Semi-precious
  • Precious
  • Gold

Best of all, besides all-ceramic crowns, these look the most like natural teeth.

Full Gold Dental Crowns

gold crowns brooklyn nySince gold is an inert metal, it is completely bio-compatible with your body.

Although not that aesthetic, these crowns are a great choice for back teeth such as molars that aren’t visible but require great strength to masticate food efficiently. To increase the strength of the crown and reduce its cost gold crowns can be combines with other metals, such as palladium, nickel, or chromium.

In terms of wearing down, they probably last the longest out of all of the dental crowns mentioned.

LuxDen dental Center offer its patients the very latest and most advanced technology which is why we have an on-site milling machine that is capable of producing precision made ceramic crowns while you wait. These crowns are made entirely from porcelain and are extremely high quality and long-lasting.

There are several advantages in choosing this option as there is no need for us to take a dental impression prior to making this type of crown. Instead, the tooth is digitally scanned and this information is transmitted to a computer. Using specialized software, our dentist Dr. Umanoff will design your crown and the design is then sent to our milling machine. This will mill your crown from a solid block of tooth colored porcelain, a process that only takes a few minutes to complete.

Once the crown has been milled, it has to be hand finished and is carefully checked to make sure it is perfect. Next, it can be tried in your mouth and fitted in place. This means there is no need for a second appointment so it will save you time, and there will be no need to have a temporary crown.

These crowns are made using the very latest CADCAM technology and in no way compromise on quality. They may not be suitable in every occasion, but if we feel this treatment is suitable then it’s definitely something we will suggest for you as this option is extremely popular.

How Long Will a Crown Last?

Generally crowns will last for 10 years or even longer but this does depend on how well you look after your new restoration. We highly recommend regular checkups and professional cleanings with us here at LuxDen Dental Center in Brooklyn. Regularly maintaining your crown and making sure you have great oral hygiene at home will help prolong its life. It’s also important to avoid using your teeth too open packets or generally using them as tools, as this could chip your natural teeth and your crown.
