How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

For example, your dentist may recommend fitting a crown if you have a tooth that is severely decayed or after root canal therapy. They can restore teeth that may have become broken or chipped. Sometimes, dental crowns are used during a smile makeover, covering teeth that are worn, unsightly, or not quite the right size or shape.

What to Expect When Having Crown?
Having a crown made and fitted is very straightforward but normally requires several visits to your dental office. After making your decision, your dentist must prepare the tooth, using a local anesthetic to numb it before it is carefully shaped. Once shaped, your dentist will take a detailed dental impression to send to the dental lab. They will make the crown to your dentist’s specifications, which can take two weeks or more. In the meantime, you will receive a temporary crown to protect the tooth. The exception is a same-day crown, which is ready to fit soon after tooth preparation, so you don’t need a temporary crown or a second appointment.
Once the crown is ready, you return to your dental office, your temporary crown is removed, and your new crown is tried in. Your dentist must make sure it fits precisely before it is cemented in place. Finally, they will check your bite, and you will be ready to enjoy your new tooth.
